Abstract: Postmortem toxicology has a unique set of considerations that are often not encountered in other toxicology subdisciplines; from sample preparation to instrumentation to interpretation, there are several factors that impact the daily duties of the postmortem practitioner. The focus of this webinar, presented by the SOFT Postmortem Toxicology Committee, will be to examine case studies focused on tolerance and polysubstance usage, as well as to delve into interpretive and analytical challenges and exploring available resources and partnerships that can assist the growing needs of this work. Overcoming these challenges is crucial, as they impact the interpretation of the results, and ultimately the determination of cause and manner of death.
Learning Objective 1: Provide a contemporary understanding of some of the challenges that are currently facing postmortem toxicologists.
Learning Objective 2: Present case studies highlighting difficulties in interpreting postmortem toxicology results, all from a toxicologist, an investigator, and a pathologist perspective.
Learning Objective 3: Discuss current analytical and instrumental challenges in postmortem toxicology.
